This example is a vintage American 3 lb 5 oz Plumb double bit felling axe with an octagonal pattern straight grain hickory 35 inch/ 89 cm long handle, sanded and lightly stained with Danish oil, with an Irish oak wedge and two round steel step wedges. This axe is well used with a beautiful patina on both the head and handle, it was probably manufactured in the U.S.A. Roughly 1930’s as a Michigan pattern
Double bit axes are great, though few modern companies still make them, they can be seen as a duel purpose tool, one side sharp for felling, and one side a little bit less so for knots, splitting etc. Another advantage of double bits is the amazing balance in the hand, nothing quite feels like it to use.
